History of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors- RICS
Many are surprised to
find out just how old RICS really is. It was established under the
leadership of John Clutton on March 23 1968, when 20 surveyors met
with the hopes of drawing up resolutions and by-laws in order to
regulate the surveying profession. One year later their membership
ballooned by over 100% to just under 50 participants. On June 15th
1968 the first council was elected and John Clutton was officially
elected the first president of the Institution of Surveyors (later
to be called "The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors").
2005 AGM:
In 2005 RICS had
successfully had their application approved and are now considered a
Designated Professional Body (DPB). This step is important because
it provided this industry much needed credibility. Now it is part of
their charter to "maintain and promote the usefulness of the
profession for the public advantage".
The change over to a
Designated Professional Body means that changes that are required to
RICS by-laws have to be ratified by the UK government even if the
majority of RICS members vote to approve the changes. This of course
adds an additional layer of supervision over the institution
ensuring that it not only looks after it's own members but also has
the best interest of the public in mind.
Today:
TRICS now has over
120,000 members in 120 countries. Since their successful application
for DPB status, they have once again risen to new heights as a
professional organization that aspires to goals of excelence and
integrity.
