The
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS):
With over 136 years of
representing estate professionals and scope which covers areas such
as land, property, environmental issues and construction, this
"standards" organization is one of the most respected real estate
professional organizations in the UK.
The Royal Institution of
Chartered Surveyors has over 120,000 members in 120 countries
worldwide. The RICS organization acts primarily as a policy and
education organization. In fact, they offer more than 400 degree
level courses and publish more than 500 policy research papers a
year.
What are the main goals of the Royal Institution of Chartered
Surveyors?
RICS is an organization
which is accountable to both the public and it's members and it has
outlined it's main roles as follows
1) The maintain
the highest standards of education and training
2) To protect
consumers through strict regulation and professional standards
3) To be the
leading source of information and independent advice on land,
property, construction and associated environmental issues.
What makes RICS different from other UK estate organizations?
One major difference
between the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors is that it is
recognized by the UK government as a Designated Professional Body (DPB).
During 2005, their application was successful and as a new DPD they
have the mandate to "maintain and promote the usefulness of the
profession for the public advantage"
When reputation is your
most important asset as an estate agent in the UK this type of
national recognition is very important to helping clients trust
their estate agents. Buying property is often the single biggest
purchase people make in their lifetimes. Because of this it is
important they trust the property agent who is responsible for
helping them either buy, sell or let their home.
Who can enroll as a RICS member?
RICS is an international
organization but the majority of it's members are from Britain. That
being said, it also has many members from other commonwealth
countries such as Canada, Hong Kong and Australia. Membership is
also growing quickly in the United States and in countries across
Africa, Asia and Europe.
